I Taught Second Grade for 10 Years and Still Couldn't Start a Blog

October 21, 2026by Ashley Newell

I was a second grade teacher for 10 years. I spent my days helping seven-year-olds write complete sentences.

And for years, the idea of writing a blog made my stomach drop.

These days, the only thing I write is a to-do list. Scribbled on the back of an envelope. Half of it crossed off by Thursday. The other half quietly moved to next week.

So when people said "you should start a blog," I'd nod and smile. Then I'd decide it was for someone else. Someone with more time. Someone who loves words. Someone who doesn't stare at a blinking cursor for 40 minutes and then go fold laundry instead.

The people my videos couldn't reach

Here's what made it worse. I knew I was missing people.

I'd been making YouTube videos about my home business. That's great for folks who like to watch. But a lot of people I know over 60 would rather sit with a cup of coffee and read something at their own pace. My videos weren't reaching them.

I was talking. And a whole group of people couldn't hear me.

I didn't have to become a writer

Then something changed. I started using an AI tool called Builder. I record a video like I normally do. Then I just talk to Builder. It turns my video into an email. Then it turns that email into a blog post.

I don't write a thing. I read it over, make sure it sounds like me, and hit publish.

The first time I did it, I sat at my kitchen table and laughed out loud. One video. Three places. About 20 minutes of my morning.

After the seizure that put me in the hospital for two weeks back in 2013, I promised myself I'd stop putting off the things I wanted to do. This was one of them. And it fits the one rule I finally stick to: do one thing at a time. I make one thing, and it does the rest of the traveling.

Make one piece and let it travel

Blogging has made a real comeback over the last couple of years. People are searching for blog posts, reading them, and sharing them again. So what you publish now gets picked up more than it would have a few years ago. Your words keep working while you're out living your life.

Here's the principle I wish someone had handed me ten years ago: don't make more content. Make one piece, and let it travel.

Your blog is the anchor. It's the master copy. Everything else gets cut from it. A short video. A social post. An email. Social media sparks the interest. The blog is where people slow down, get to know you, and decide to trust you.

Jim Rohn said, "You get paid for bringing value to the marketplace." A blog is one of the simplest ways to do that. You share what you're learning. People get to know you before they ever buy anything or join anything you recommend.

You don't need to be a writer for that. You just need something to say. And you already have that: years of living, and lessons nobody else has learned quite the way you have. There are readers out there waiting for exactly your story.

Where I'd start if I were you

Builder is part of the Home Business Academy Turnkey System I use for my own online business. The setup walks you through choosing a look you like (you can change it later) and getting your first post published in about five minutes.

A quick note: I earn a commission if you join through my link, and your price doesn't change. If you're curious, you can see how the Turnkey System works here.

Thanks for being here, and remember, every dream begins with believing it's possible. Keep believing, keep growing, and keep creating a life you love!
