One morning not long ago, I had twelve things on my to-do list.
By noon, eight of them were done.
And then something happened that honestly caught me off guard. I sat down and ate lunch. Like, actually sat down. No laptop open, no phone in my hand, no half-chewed sandwich while I toggled between tabs.
Just lunch.
That probably sounds ridiculous. But if you've ever worked from home and felt like you were somehow busier than when you had a 9-to-5, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Busy isn't the same as getting things done
For years, I believed being busy meant I was being productive. I'd spend two hours writing one email. Another hour trying to figure out how to format a landing page. Forty-five minutes staring at a blank screen trying to come up with a social media post that didn't sound like every other one.
And by 3pm, I'd look at my list and realize I'd checked off maybe two things. Maybe.
The worst part wasn't the unfinished list. It was the feeling. That sinking "I worked all day and I have nothing to show for it" feeling. That "maybe I'm not cut out for this" feeling.
I used to be a second grade teacher, until seizures put me in the hospital for two weeks and ended my teaching career. Since 2015 I've been building online businesses, from Amazon to Etsy to Shopify to TikTok. I've tried it all, and through every single one, the same bottleneck showed up.
The repetitive stuff ate me alive. The writing, the planning, the formatting, all those tasks that felt like they should take 20 minutes but somehow swallowed entire mornings.
Then something shifted
I started letting AI handle those exact tasks. Not the creative thinking, not the planning of where I'm going, and not the relationships with real people. Just the repetitive grind that was stealing my time and, honestly, stealing my energy.
And when those hours came back to me, I didn't just sit there. I filled them with things I'd been "getting to" for months, with the work that actually matters, and yes, with a lunch I could taste. 😂
The real change for me wasn't learning a new tool. It was giving myself permission to stop doing everything the slow way just because the slow way felt like "real work."
One hour back. That's all it took to feel like a completely different kind of day.
There are enough hours
If you've been working from home and wondering why it doesn't feel like the freedom you signed up for, I want you to hear this: there are enough hours. You might just be spending them on the wrong things.
I spent ten years bouncing between businesses before I figured out two simple rules. Set your schedule the night before. Do one thing at a time. And now I've added a third: let the machine handle what the machine can handle.
That breathing room you've been craving is waiting on the other side of doing less of the stuff that never needed to be you in the first place.
